THE LEGEND

In the oldest mythologies, still water is not a surface. It is a door. The Greeks believed that pools and springs were openings to the underworld, places where Narcissus looked down and saw not his reflection but the truth of what lay beneath. Norse mythology placed the Well of Mimir at the root of Yggdrasil, and Odin sacrificed an eye to drink from it, because wisdom requires seeing not just what is above but what is reflected below. Japanese Shinto tradition holds that mirrors are vessels of divine presence, and the Yata no Kagami, the sacred mirror of Amaterasu, is one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan.

The mirror does not create. It reveals. It shows what already exists but has gone unexamined. To look into still water is to see yourself and the world superimposed, occupying the same space without conflict. This is the mirror-mind of contemplative traditions: a consciousness so still that it reflects without distortion.

When two breweries stand at the edge of the same pool, they do not see the same reflection. Oak Union sees Hel’s Garten, the quiet underworld garden. Obelisk sees its own helm, its own tradition. But the water holds both images without choosing between them. The collaboration is not a compromise. It is a convergence, two visions meeting in the same undisturbed surface.

Mirror Mind is a Pale Kellerbier Lager at 4.9% ABV, brewed in collaboration with Obelisk Beer Co. Unfiltered, like water that has not been disturbed, it carries honeyed cracker, nutty spelt, floral spice, and tangerine zest in a glass as calm and clear as a forest pool at dawn. It asks nothing of you except stillness.
