Milwaukie

THE LEGEND

Not every name has to come out of a grimoire. Some of them come off a street sign. Milwaukie sits on the east bank of the Willamette a few miles south of Portland and a world away from it, in the flat green country where Clackamas County still remembers being farmland. Lot Whitcomb laid the town out in the 1840s and named it after Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Somewhere between the plat map and the post office the spelling drifted, and nobody ever went back to fix it. That is the first thing worth knowing about this place. It has no interest in being mistaken for anywhere else.

The second thing is the cherry. In the orchards along the river, a nurseryman named Seth Lewelling grew out a dark, heavy, impossibly sweet seedling and named it for his orchard foreman, Ah Bing. The Bing cherry went from one Milwaukie row to nearly every fruit stand in the country, and the town said almost nothing about it. Milwaukie has a long habit of producing something excellent and then declining to make a speech. It calls itself the Dogwood City of the West, which is exactly the sort of quiet, floral, faintly stubborn thing this town would call itself.

This is where Oak Union puts its roots down. Not in a mythology carried over from another continent, but on a real street, in a real neighborhood, with the trains running through downtown and the river a few blocks west. The people who will come through the door are not pilgrims. They are neighbors. They will come off a shift, walk the dog, park badly, and want a beer that does not require an explanation.

Milwaukie is that beer. An Oregon Lager at 4.7% ABV, bright pale gold, with a clean grain snap and a bone dry finish that keeps it honest. There is no legend in the glass. There is a town in it, a long table waiting, and the particular satisfaction of naming something after the place you actually live. Cheers, Milwaukie.
